A child once asked his grandfather, “Why do you smile so much when you pray?” The old man replied, “Because I have already found my treasure.” That simple answer captures today’s Gospel. Jesus says, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field… and like a merchant in search of fine pearls” (Matthew 13:44-46). Those who discover Christ gladly let go of everything else because nothing compares with Him.
Solomon understood this truth. Instead of asking for riches or power, he prayed, “Give your servant an understanding heart” (1 Kings 3:9). God delighted in that request because wisdom teaches us to recognize what is truly valuable.
In our busy families, careers, and ambitions, we can spend enormous energy chasing things that cannot satisfy. Yet St. Paul reassures us, “All things work together for good for those who love God” (Romans 8:28). When Christ is our greatest treasure, even life’s struggles become opportunities for grace.
At this Eucharist, we meet the priceless Pearl once again. Let us leave this altar with joyful hearts, willing to exchange everything that fades for the One who never does. For whoever finds Christ has already found life’s greatest treasure.
May we also leave this altar with Solomon’s wise heart, the merchant’s joyful courage, and the saint’s unwavering conviction: to know Jesus is the greatest wealth, to love Him is the deepest joy, and to belong to Him is the only treasure that nothing can ever take away, Amen.
